The Mill was built over several years and completed in 1832. It was designed by William Stirling, Architect of Dunblane, who was also responsible for Lecropt Kirk in Bridge of Allan.

The property is an fascinating example of Georgian architecture with great symmetry, dressed stone and slated roofs. William Stirling is famous for many churches, mansions, grand steadings and neo -classical re-modeling of castles in the Perthshire area and beyond. The Mill has a wealth of quirky features including stone steps, a doo’cot, date stone, slated roof and the original water wheel.

We believe the Mill was originally a flax mill. At that time flax milling was a growth industry and Ruthvenfield near Perth was drawing workers from all over the highlands.  Today all of Ruthvenfield’s mills are either ruins or have gone completely which is why The Old Mill is so architecturally significant and why Historic Scotland have taken such an interest in the site.

Further back in history, the Mill was reputed to be the armoury for Fingal’s army and certainly there is evidence of the smelting of iron ore up in the hills near Loch Turret. Historically it was recorded that there was a Roman burial site on the hill behind the Mill and Clathick to the West. There are also several stone circles.

Here are just a few examples of the many fabulous comments received by previous guests:

“I celebrated my 60th in Scotland at The Mill with some German friends and my Family – it is absolutely fantastic. I stay in 5 star Hotels Worldwide on business, but in my opinion this is much better, you feel like “King of the Castle”. The standard of luxury is second to none. Choice of furnishing excellent, absolutely designer standard. Unbelievable value for money, we will be back again.”

“Our family stayed at The Mill for a week and had the most wonderful time, it has been restored to a standard beyond excellent. It was warm and cosy, the furnishings were comfortable and aesthetically pleasing, the kitchen was “out-of-this world” with all of the latest amenities, the bathrooms were equipped with rain showers, and the open plan layout made it easy for everyone to participate in the family fun. The best feature for us was the large kitchen, where we could all help out with cooking at the same time, making it a great family activity.  The Mill is such an awesome place with lots to do and quaint towns to visit in the vicinity.”

“The Mill is without doubt, one of the finest houses I have ever stayed in.  The house is breathtaking with each of the public and bedroom areas well thought out. The public areas were decorated in contemporary materials with a traditional twist.
The mezzanine being a particular favourite of
mine with the hidden door in the book case.
The dining area and kitchen (which is brilliant) easily accommodated 18 for dinner one evening. Each of
the bedrooms were beautiful and the bathrooms
with up to date fixtures. Fluffy towels and white company bed linen and throws. Heaven.”
